Micronesia. North is at top. Satellite image showing the collection of islands in the western Pacific Ocean (blue) known as Micronesia. Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands. It is distinct from Melanesia to the south, and Polynesia to the east. The Philippines lie to the west, and Indonesia to the southwest. The following islands and groups of islands are considered part of Micronesia: Kiribati (Gilbert Islands or Tungaru), Banaba, Line Islands, Phoenix Islands, Mariana Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Wake Island.
