The skin isthe external covering of the body, and is to man a naturalclothing. There are yet some nations of the earthknown to exist without wearing any artificial clothingwhatever. I mention this as merely showing the amountof protection derived from the skin. That it is a cover-ing or protection, we have Only to notice those parts ofour person that are exposed to the air, such as the handsand face, which are usually uncovered ; these meet theair with perfect impunity. In addition to being a cloth-ing, the skin is pierced with an innumerable number ofvery small holes, through which constantly pass a vastquantity of fluids from, the body ; either in apparent orinvisible perspiration.
