H. & D. The hero of this little story is—or was—John McCarty, able trackman, son ofthe ould sod, minus one eye and there-fore familiarly, if not respectfully, calledby all One-eyed Mac. He was knownthroughout this particular part of theSouthwest as one of the best heelersto be had for a track-laying gang. It wasin the days when the advent of the track-laying train was scorned as unworthy ofconsideration by the old timers whohad assisted in laying hundreds of milesof track by the iron-and-tie-car route andwho, as a consequence, could not or wouldnot look upon the new invention withfavor. To those who know, there is anart in the laying of rails by hand. In the spring and summer of 98, theRock Island Railway completed the ex-tension of the Mangum branch fromMountain View to Mangum, in the south-western part of Indian Territory (nowthe State of Oklahoma).
