He was the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom 1913 ntil his death in 1918 (during World War I. ). He founded the State Chronicle, worked on the New York World and Evening Post,served as the editor of The Atlantic Monthly and the St. Joseph Gazette, acted as literary adviser to Houghton Mifflin and was a partner of Doubleday, Page & Company, publishers.
