The Americanfort at West Point, on the Hudson,was coveted, and Arnold set out toobtain the post of commandant thathe might work its ruin, for whichhe was to receive a large monevconsideration and a commission asbrigadier-general in the Britisharmy. Though Washington hadother plans for Arnolds employ-ment, such was his regard for theman, that he deferred to the lat- ters wishes, and the first requirement of the plot was effected.
