He was born in the city of New York, October 27, 1858, and was there-fore a little more than sixty years of age. No other American of hrs time had been known sowidely, and in so many relationships, as a public character. He had maintained superb vigorof body and mind, with reasonable expectation of a long further career of activity and useful-ness; but a tropical fever in Brazil when on an exploring trip several years ago had lefttraces from which he never wholly recovered. He was active, however, to his last day, anddied suddenly of an embolism. The funeral was quiet, as he preferred to have it, in the com-munity where he lived.
