Transactions . per trim when loaded with full bunkers:and the usual high coamings are fitted on the poop-deck and onthe main deck forward. The bottom of the vessel is constructed on the cellular systemfor a suitable breadth, and the inner bottom is then raised andsloped upwards in the wings and built into the sides of the vessel, forming a suitable incline for gravitating the cargo on tothe conveyors, and also giving the vessel the advantage of beingabout half loaded when in ballast and bunkers. In the centre-line is constructed a slope-top tunnel extendingthroughout the hold from the engine space to the forepeak(Figs. 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12), and between this tunnel and theraised portions of the double bottom are placed the conveyor-belts, which are of the Robin patent construction type, one ineach side of the vessel (Fig. 12). The sides of the tunnel belowthe level of the hatchways over the belts are open for free accessto the belts and carriers at all times. 266 VARIOUS TYPES OF COAL Over these conveyor-beltsare constructed strong ironguide-plates running the fulllength of the hold, andpartly covering the belts, leaving a 24-inch hatch overa 36-inch belt. This space iscovered in the holds bycross-laid hatch-covers, say11 inches in length by 3inches in thickness, whichsupport the cargo and leavethe conveyors free to workwithout carrying the load. At the after end of thehold a portion of the hatch, over which the 11-inch hatch-cover is omitted, is coveredby a horizontal iron slide-door, A (Fig. 8), operated bya ratchet in the tunnel. Onthe foreside of the bulkheadis constructed an accesschamber, in free communica-tion with the tunnel, whichis of such a form as to partlyprotect the slide-door fromcargo when loading, and inthe floor of this projection ofthe chamber is fitted a flap-hatch to give access to thehold from the tunnel. At the after end of thecargo space, the conveyorsrise from the horizontal andpass upwards in iron cham-bers through the machine
