One day as the njokoos were rambling, suddenlytwo hanous fell upon the backs of two of their num-ber, broke their spines and killed them. The crashthe hanous made in falling frightened all the other 251 THE WORLD OF THE GREAT FOREST njokoos, for they did not know what it was, and theyfled with the utmost speed. The noise they madein their flight was fearful, as they crashed through the. jungle. After a longrun they stopped, andlooking at their num-ber saw that two weremissing, for they kneweach other well. There wasgreat sorrow among said, Let us go back where weheard the crash. Perhaps our missing -r^-lt-icompanions are there. For when theyhad heard the hanou fall, they were so frightened thatthey had no time to look and see what had they went back ; and when they arrived at the placewhere the crash had occurred, they saw their two old EVIL DAYS FOR THE NJOKOOS companions lying on the ground dead. They utteredtrumpetings of sorrow at the sight. They came roundthe poor bodies, and grasped their legs with theirtrunks to pull them up, but the legs fell back. Theyseized their trunks, but these also fell back on theground. They trumpeted to them, but they did notanswer. When they had made sure that they weredead, they left the place, but not before t
