The Lamellibranchiates may be conveniently divided into (1) Asiphonida, or those which have no tubes or siphons. (2) Siphonida, or those which have two tubes or siphons serving for the entrance and emission of water. These last are the most numerous, and usually burrow in sand or other substances, using their siphons, which are some- times very long, to admit water to the gills.
