THE MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL. VJ O hospital has finer traditions, nor more interesting^ ^ history, than the Massachusetts General Hospital. Itsachievements and discoveries are known throughoutthe world. The events leading up to its establishment are apart of the history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,^roday it ranks with the most progressive and scientifichospitals of its kind. A few facts ha\e been gathered from a history of theHospital by Mr. Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch, who was atrustee of the Institution from 1837 to 1856. On November12. 17^8, Thomas Boylston, Esq., bequeathed a sum of moneyfor tlie establishment of a small-pox hospital and a hospitalfor the insane. Unfortunately the testator of the will wasa member of London firm which became insolvent, so thatthe funds were lost. In 1797, Hon. William Phillips be-queathed $ for the same purpose.
