During his service as a volunteerfireman, he secured the experience infighting fire which has distinguishedhim in the present Department as acool, intrepid and valuable several years after the organiza-tion of the Paid Department he wasa bellringer on the lookout towers. OnFebruary 8, 1868, he was appointed afireman, and assigned to Hook andLadder 2. On May 30, 1868, he waspromoted to be assistant foreman ofHook and Ladder 7, and on July 15,1869, he was advanced to the rank offoreman, and assigned to the samecompany. He was subsequently trans-ferred to Hook and Ladder 2, andwhile in that company was severelyburned by an explosion at a fire in adyeing establishment at Sixth Avenueand Forty-third Street. The injuriessustained laid him up for two WILLIAM ROWE. On May 21, 1873, his merit as a fore- man was again recognized, and he was promoted to the rank of chief ofbattalion, and assigned to the Fifth Battalion, in command of which he <) r n k i r E m E n.
