Thesquare tower, cen-tral in the church,or standing free, re-ceived attention dur-ing the epoch of theRenaissance,andseveral of the finestspecimens which ex-ist are iu are the centraltower of S. Pierre atCoutances(Manche),the tower of thechurch at Mortagne,and that of thechurch of S. Ger-main at Argentan(Orne). Of the later clas-sical styles are thechurch of S. Ger-vais S. Protais atGisors, and the. FRANCE ruinedalibcy tif Bec-IIcllouin (Eure) ; also, in tiiosame dc|iartment, the chateaux of lieaumesiiiland Chand)ray. The nortii tower of Evreuxcathedral should also be conqjared witli tlie earliertowers named in the paragraph. TheHotel de Ville, at Alencjon (Orne), and the pre-iecture of the same city are valuable pieces ofstreet architecture, and so is, in one sense, thebishops palace at Seez. , in thestrict sense of manor hcni-ses, not necessarily ofgreat size, are as numerous in the style of theeighteenth century as they are of an earlierepoch; such are those of M<?davy (Orne),Quilly-le-Vicomte (Calvados), Buisson-de-Mai,and Croix Saint Leufroy (Eure), — all of thisinteresting class. Finally, for striitly modernbuildings, there are to be mentioned the chateauof Quesnay-Guesnon (Calvados), the Hotel deVille at Breteuil (Eure), and the extraordinarycollection of buildings w
