The East India Company Free Trade Wharf, Wapping, London, England, UK: abandoned and awaiting redevelopment, circa 1984. Black and white film photograph

This once-busy wharf occupied several warehouses built by the East India Company in the 1790s. The Ratcliff saltpetre warehouses have survived to the present day, escaping the threat of fires and explosions to outlive the East India Company warehouses storing less dangerous cargoes. Two of the original three buildings have been part of the Free Trade Wharf luxury housing development in the later 19980s.
