Englishinterests are equally concerned, remembering that British shippingnaturally frequents the western coast in preference to the oftenfrozen and dangerous and always intricate Baltic Sea, with its highinsurance rates. Touching the prospects of the enterprise, it issignificant that even now, despite the limited accommodation, nofewer than 10,000 and 6,000 vessels annually pass through, respect-ively, the TroUhatte and Gota Canals. 5o8 THE ENGINEERING The municipal au-thorities of Gothen-burg have recentlygiven practical proofthat they share thecheerful optimism ofthe country generallyand regard with ex-treme hopefulness thetwo enterprises atTrollhatte to which Ihave referred. Theybelieve that much ofthe anticipated in-creased trafficthrough the enlargedcanal must directlybenefit the terminalcity and port, andthat such must be theresult also of anylarger employment ofelectrical power-that, thanks to both,there will be a mark-ed industrial develop-ment along the canalroute and on thebanks of the Gota,taking its require-ments from abroadand exporting i t sproducts via Gothen-burg. Much energyhas accordingly beendisplayed in extend-ing and improvingthe harbour and inthe endeavour to con-solidate the corpora-tions authority INDUSTRIAL SWEDEN. 509 over both banks of the Gota and its outlet so that the harbour plansas a whole shall be secured from outside influence.
