Forest management United States; Range management United States; Forests and forestry Research United States; Rangelands Research United States; Forest management United States Bibliography; Range management United States Bibliography. PRODUCTS AND ENGINEERING Powered backup rollers developed at the Forest Products Laboratory are designed to eliminate spinout on veneer lathes. The powered backup device, a set of two hydraulically powered rollers, turns against the outer surface of the log as it is peeled and helps the chucks provide torque. Chucks are devices that hold and turn the log against the veneer knife. Constant pressure from a hydraulic cylinder holds the backup rollers against the log. Spinout occurs when the amount of lathe torque created by the cutting knife exceeds the strength of the wood at the ends of the log. When that strength is exceeded, the wood fails and the lathe chucks spin free, rendering the log useless for veneer peeling. Spinout now occurs with 5 to 8 percent of the logs peeled for veneer. Since plywood, made from veneer, accounts for 80 percent of the value of all United States panel products, spinout represents a significant loss of valuable timber. Logs with soft centers, once considered unpeelable, can now be used. The backup rollers also allow the use of smaller lathe chucks; this reduces the core diameter, thus increasing the veneer yield per log. The new process will also facilitate peeling thicker veneers, which can be used in products of the future. 24 POWERED BACKUP ROLLERS SAVE VENEER.
