ALCHEMY - SEPARATIO - MERCURY Engraving from JOhann Daniel Mylius, Philosophia Reformata, 1622. The winged Mercury with a caduceus in each hand, and the Sun and Moon on either side, stands between what may be taken as Mars (the armed man) and Venus (the woman with the bird), but the deeper symbolism identifies these as Sulphur and Salt, respectively. The two must be separated by Mercury, as one of the primary stages of the alchemical process. The image is linked with the second kay (clavis) of Basil Valentine.
