Covenanters' Memorial on Deerness, Orkney. DETAILS IN DESCRIPTION.

The Presbyterian Covenanters had revolted against the government and been captured at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge in June 1679. They were sentenced to transportation to Barbados for sale as slaves, however the ship carrying them cast its moorings and was driven ashore on Deerness. The crew battened the hatches to stop their prisoners escaping and consequently only 50 survived. The monument was built in 1888. An inscription on it reads: 'For Christ His Crown Covenant / Erected / By / Public Subscription / Aug 1888 / To / The memory Of / 200 Covenanters / Who Were Taken Prisoners / At Bothwell Bridge, And / Sentenced To Transportation / For Life But Who Perished By / Shipwreck Near This Spot / On 10th December 1679'. The monument is high with a cushion capital.
