Trekkers cross a steep snow slope high in the Fann mountains of tajikistan


Tajikistan is a former Soviet republic that became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991. It is a rugged mountainous country with lush valleys to the south and north and is Central Asia's poorest nation. The Fann Mountains in the country form part of the Pamirs mountain range and are located in Tajikistan's Sughd Province they contain roughly one hundred peaks, with several rising to altitudes of more than 5000 meters and the highest point in the Fann Mountains is Chimtarga peak at 5489 meters.
