For a solidmonth they did the impossible in clearing Belleau (bel-lo)Wood of German machine gun nests. The fighting quali-ties of the Americans no longer needed proof. A new hourwas about to strike — and the German armies knew it. It struck July 18, when General Foch began the alliedoffensive along the whole front from Chateau-Thierry on.
