Illustration of volcanoes on Mars. The volcanoes shown here are Ceraunius Tholus and the smaller Uranius Tholus which are found in the Tharsis region of the planet. The presence of impact craters all over these volcanoes suggests that they have been inactive for a long time. The Tharsis region has a rich history of volcanism and contains many immense volcanic cones. Amongst these is Olympus Mons, the largest volcanic feature in the Solar System. The surface of the planet in this region is covered by iron-rich rocks and dust which give Mars its 'red' appearance.
