The parish church, La Vernarède, Gard, France, is a church with something unusual beneath it.

The parish church at La Vernarède in the Gard departmentof the Languedoc was built in 1969. At the same time the local coal field was expanding and it was built to serve the new village of La Vernarède and its growing population. There had been mining activity in the area, centred on other villages. An inclined plane existed on the site selected for the church and the church was built over the winding gear for the inclined plane. Much of the winding gear still exists beneath the church. The village is now in decline with a number of empty house and a population of about 440.
