Marie Stopes in her laboratory in the Victoria University of Manchester, possibly studying coal ball slides, 1904. Photographer unknown. Marie Stopes (1880-1958) is best remembered as a feminist and a birth control pioneer, though she also made significant contributions to plant paleontology and coal classification, and was the first female academic on the faculty of the University of Manchester. Her sex manual Married Love (1918) brought the subject of birth control into wide public discourse.
