Liverpool, UK. 20th October, 2014. The future of hundreds of sentimental love locks at Liverpool’s Albert Dock is under review. There was uproar last year when the Canal and River Trust removed the tokens of affection from the waterfront because they were causing maintenance problems. Since then the padlocks, designed to symbolise an unbreakable bond, have been allowed to return to the railings. The concern was that the padlocks were causing the riverside fence chains to break and preventing the trust from carrying out essential maintenance work. Credit: Mar Photographics/Alamy Live News

“The future of hundreds of sentimental love locks at Liverpool’s Albert Dock is under review. But those in charge of looking after the area around the Mersey have this week told the Sunday ECHO the trinkets still face an uncertain future. Steve Bergquist, maintenance manager for the Canal and River Trust, said: “We are currently reviewing various options for the love locks and how we could encompass them on such an important site. “It is clearly a sensitive issue and no firm decision has been made as yet.” The concern last year was that the padlocks were causing the riverside fence chains to break and preventing the trust from carrying out essential maintenance work. Since the early 2000s love locks have been appearing at an increasing number of locations worldwide. They see a padlock attached to a bridge, fence, gate, or railing with names or initials inscribed on the padlock and its key thrown away.” Source Liverpool Echo
