British entomology; being illustrations and descriptions of the genera of insects found in Great Britain and Ireland: containing coloured figures from nature of the most rare and beautiful species, and in many instances of the plants upon which they are found. rtunate in capturingboth sexes, as the males of this family are very seldom known;and Panzer having only figured the female, the male is hererepresented in preference, and the body of the female is givenat the bottom of the plate. Latreilles genus Ichneumon, comprising most of the generainto which Fabricius had divided it (although very imper-fectly), must be considered as a family, since it is impossibleto include insects in the same genus so widely different asPeltastes (plate 4.) and our present subject, Bassus; andalthough the long exserted ovipositor gives it the appearanceof a Pimpla, it will be found to be much more nearly alliedto Microgaster and Agathis. There are probably about 15 British species in our cabinetsallied to that figured, but I think only 4< or 5 of them per-fectly agree with our type, and I believe none of their nameshave yet been ascertained. Vaccinium Myrtillus (Bilberry), growing in abundancewhere the insect was taken, has been selected for the plate. Ji/. ci^.^c^^«d321. MICROGASTER ALVEARIUS. Order Hynienoptera. Fam.
