'Scallop' is a sculpture to celebrate Benjamin Britten by Maggi Hambling, made in stainless steel with Sam and Dennis Pegg ( & Sons Ltd, Steel Fabricators of Aldeburgh). 'Scallop' was unveiled by the Smith MP on 2003. Maggi Hambling's sculpture was made specifically for this site on the Suffolk coast, which inspired so much of Britten's music. The phrase' I hear those voices that will not be drowned' (pierced through the steel, against the sky) is taken from Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes', which was itself base on 'The Borough' by the Aldeburgh poet George Crabbe. The flat and curved forms of the Scallop shell, ancient symbol of pilgrimage, the sea and cradle of Venus, have been destroyed and recreated. Images of wings in flight, fish swimming and the corrugations of waves are suggested in the sculpture.
