Milling.—For some time the most popularmilling was at Pattersons, below Dayton, and with^ Owen Davis, on Beaver; but thefirst mill in Miami county is thought to havebeen erected by John Manning, on Piquabend. Nearly the same time Henry Garrarderected on Spring creek a corn and saw mill,on land now included within the farm of It is narrated by the colonel, andis a fact worthy of notice, that on the firstestablishment of these mills they would runten months in a year, and sometimes longer,by heads. The creek would not now turnone pair of stones two months in a year, andthen only on the recurrence of freshets. Itis thought this remark is applicable toallstreams of the upper Miami valley, showingthere is less spring drainage from the countrysince it has become cleared of its timber andconsolidated by cultivation.
