Falkirk Wheel
The wheel has an overall diameter of 35 metres consisting of two opposing arms which extend 15 metres beyond a central axle. Two opposed water-filled caissons, each with a capacity of 80,000 gallons (302 tons), are fitted between the ends of the arms which accommodate boats which are lifted / dropped about 24 metres between the Union and the Forth & Clyde canals. Opened in May 2002 & a unique engineering feat by Butterley Engineering Ripley
