The Short Shetland flying boat, successor to the Sunderland. The latter were successful, but RAF officials realized the need to develop its successor. The end result was the Short Shetland first flown in 1944. With the end of World War II, the machine was transferred to the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment for testing, but before all tests were completed, the aircraft was destroyed in a fire, in 1946. The second prototype was converted into a passenger aircraft, but despite trials, no buyers could be found and the aircraft was scrapped in 1951.

After several flights, the aircraft was retired and scrapped in 1951.
