What the sentence was in this case, we areunable to learn. The historian informs us, however, that, havingbeen convicted in a similar suit at the Franciscan Convent atAvignon, the ants were not only excommunicated from the EomanCatholic Apostolic Church, but were sentenced by the friars tothe pain of removal, within three days, to a place assigned them in the centre of theearth. The canon-ical account grave-ly adds that the antsobeyed, and carriedaway all theiryoung and all theirstores! The white andother ants have, however, enemiesfar more tangiblethan bulls of ex-communication, inthe Myrmccophaga,or the great ant-eater, the Taman-dua, and the littleant-eater, of which the last two have a prehensile tail. The great;ant-eater is a most curious animal, but well adapted to the purposes. GREAT AN T-E ATE R.
