Doubts have been cast uponthis account of the bridge by reference to certain delinea-tions of it in Trajans column, Avhich differ from Dionsdescription: but it appears that no attempt is made onthe column to offer a model of the bridge, but only tocommemorate its Bridge over the Ilissus. The annexed figure represents a Roman bridge overthe river Ilissus, in Greece. Passing over the fall of the Roman empire and theage of barbarism which succeeded, Ave find the Moors inSpain to be the first successful bridge-builders in what iscalled Modern Europe. The bridge of Cordova over theGuadalquiver is a fine specimen of their skill. One of the most ancient bridges of Modern Europe isthat on the Rhone at Avignon.
