Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany: Northern arch of the Steinerne Brücke or Stone Bridge, in Regensburg, Germany, which links the old Bavarian district of Stadtamhof with Regensburg’s Old Town. In the Middle Ages, Regensburg was an important economic centre and required a permanent river crossing. The Steinerne Brücke was built between 1135 and 1146 AD and for nearly 800 years, until 1935, was the only bridge offering a reliable means of crossing the Danube in the city and wide surrounding area. The structure spans the river at a length of approximately 300 metres. There are 16 footings, upon which the barrel vaults of the bridge construction rest. This wonder of medieval engineering skill, which served as the model for Prague’s Charles Bridge, is closed to traffic today. Regensburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
