Liver abscess. Gross specimen of liver tissue with an abscess (white) that formed due to infection of the organ with amoebae. The development of such an amoebic liver abscess is a rare form of amoebiasis (amoeba infection). The infection involves the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica, and occurs in areas of poor sanitation worldwide. Infection is by the ingestion of the amoeba, a microscopic protozoan, usually through contaminated drinking water. The invasive form of the disease, where the amoeba are found outside the digestive tract, is treated with drugs. Separate treatment is needed to clear the digestive tract of amoeba. Photographed in Africa.
