For twenty-seven years the father was amachinist and foreman, being a resident of Mead-ville, Pa. In the latter place in 1877 youngHainen commenced ser\-ing an apprenticeship inthe .shops of the New York, &Ohio Railroad, then called the Atlantic & GreatWestern. He finished his trade on reaching hismajority, and then worked as a journeyman inthe same shops until April i, 1889. At that timehe was made foreman of a gang of men who wereengaged in erecting and repairing locomotives forthe Meadville Works. From that time until1892 he superintended .some twenty hands, andwas then offered a
