At the age of eighteen he started business for himself, and since that time hastried many pursuits, first as a hat manufacturer, printer, then merchant, and after thatas a distiller. In the Spring of 1858 he came to Cincinnati, and, under the firm nameof Maddux Brothers, organized the first house in the city who systemized the plan ofselling goods to the country merchants by traveling salesmen from samples—a mode ofdoing business that is now so universally adopted by merchants every-where, in thewhol
