Barnacle research. Barnacles (Balanus amphitrite), on pieces of wood, being handled by a researcher in a laboratory. The measuring jaws of a set of digital calipers is at upper left. Barnacles have a natural adhesive that allows them to cling firmly to rocks and boats. When found on boats, they reduce the efficiency of the boat's passage through the water, requiring increased fuel consumption, and therefore increased carbon emissions.
