Replica Sopwith Snipe Great War biplane fighter aircraft flying at the Shuttleworth Trust Wings and Wheels Air Show
Successor to the Sopwith Camel, the Snipe was an RAF biplane fighter aircraft that entered service towards the end of the First World War. It was selected as the standard post-war single seat RAF fighter, being replaced by the Gloster Grebe during 1924, and the last examples were not finally retired until 1926. Two original Snipes exist, one at The Canadian Aviation Museum and the other in the USA at The National Air And Space Museum. The fuselage of Major Barker’s aircraft is also preserved at the Canadian War Museum. There are three other completed replica Snipes, of which this one is the most recent, being built in New Zealand and based at the preserved Stow Maries Great War aerodrome in Essex, UK
