Portugal, Monastery of Batalha, Founder's Chapel, effigies of Joao I and Philippa of Lancaster
Batalha Monastery (Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitoria de Batalha) is a magnificent example of medieval Portuguese architecture. In 1385, King Joao I vowed that if his outnumbered army defeated the Castilians at the important Battle of Aljubarrota, he would build a magnificent monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The construction of the Founder's Chapel was a late decision by Joao I. In 1434, a year after the king's death, it had been completed, and the royal couple's remains were laid to rest there. The architect was Huguet. The Monastery was designated a World Heritage Site in 1983.
