In the meantime the Cricket had suc-ceeded in getting around a long, narrowneck of land, and found herself in theenemys rear. Having got a fresh crew tothe gun on the upper deck, and remannedtwo of the other guns with contrabands,the fire was directed with such effect thatthe enemy were driven from their guns,and the Juliet escaped up the river intow of the Champion. The Admiral immediately hastened tothe pilot-house, and entered the door justas a bursting shell wounded the pilot, andkilled all the guns crew forward. By thistime the engine had stopped; but the cur-rent, running at the rate of four miles perhour, was bearing the Cricket rapidlydown stream. Going below, the Admiralfound the engineer had been killed with hishand on the throttle-valve, and as he ex-pired he had shut off the steam. Steamwas turned on, and the engine once morestarted. The gun-deck was covered with dead andwounded, and all but one of the guns wasdisabled. In the fire-room all the firemenwere hors du combat. tained the enemys fire, she had twelvekilled and nineteen wounded, most of thelatter severely.
