Foot-and-mouth disease virus drug complex. Computer artwork showing the structure of a molecule of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) RNA-depende
Foot-and-mouth disease virus drug complex. Computer artwork showing the structure of a molecule of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), in complex with a template (pale pink) primer (mauve), RNA (ribonucleic acid) and the drug ribavirin (spheres, centre). Ribavirin is used to treat hepatitis C and viral haemorrhagic fevers by preventing viral RNA synthesis. It is a prodrug, which when metabolized resembles purine RNA nucleotides and contributes to virus extinction through lethal mutagenesis. RdRp is an enzyme that catalyses the replication of RNA from an RNA template.
