Supernova 1987A, multi-wavelength view. Combined observations from three different observatories of the remains of supernova 1987A (SN 1987A). The three individual images are across bottom: newly formed dust (red) in the centre of the supernova remnant imaged at submillimeter wavelengths by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA); the expanding shockwave in visible light (green from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST); and the expanding shockwave in X-ray (blue) from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Supernova 1987A is 163,000 light years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the constellation of Dorado. Image published in 2017.
