He entered the volunteerservice, early in the war of the Rebellion, as captain ofthe Third Rhode Island Artillery, August 27, [861, andparticipated in ( Shermans Port Royal, SouthCarolina, expedition at Hilton Head and Bay Point,South Carolina, in command of Company D, Third RhodeIsland Artillery, and was engaged in the operations re-sulting in the capture of Morris Island, South [e commanded his battery in the assault and capture ofthe Confederate batteries on the lower end of the island.
