. Annual Report of the Librarian of Congress. xis V. Babine, the specialist in charge of the Slavicliterature in the Library, who inspected it in our behalf inthe autumn of 1903, and who personally saw to the packingand shipment of it during the past winter. The ownersmanuscript catalogue accompanies the collection. The collection represents the result of systematic ac-cumulation, over a long period, by a competent bibli-ographer, with ample funds, and especially interested in Russian bibliography, history, and literature. Not merely, therefore, does it omit no important work of the Russianhistorians and critics from Tatishchev and Karamzin toPogodin, Soloviev, Kostomarov, and Kluchevskii, but itincludes among its source material complete sets of theRussian Annals, of the publications of historical and archae-ological societies, and of the provincial commissions whoseobject is to collect and publish documents relating to thenational history. It has, for instance, the Collections(Sbornik) of the Imperial Russian Historical Society,. GENNADIUS VASIUEVICH YUDIN Report of the Librarian of Congress 21 the Papers (Chteniia) of the Moscow Society of RussianHistory and Antiquities, the Russian antiquities (Russ-kaia starina), and the Historical review ( Istoricheskiivestnik). The sixty sets of society and periodical publi-cations alone would form a library of some six thousandvolumes. It is rich in local history, ethnography and insti-tutional history, and in the record and literature of specialgroups and sects. It would furnish ample material for thestudent of the awakening of Russia under Byzantine influ-ence and of the later awakening under the influence ofwestern Europe. In pure literature the collection of texts includes the bestedition of every important Russian writer. Even the finearts (though not its specialty) are fairly represented, espe-cially notable being a set of the Rovinski publications per-haps the most nearly complete in existence. For most of his life Mr.
