The two ends of the white wires to be joined should then betwisted together, the twist extending through the entire length ofthe bare wire and so as to include about one-half inch of the in-sulation. The details of the method of splicing the two wires together isshown in the left-hand portion of Fig. 600. The paper sleeve is tobe then slid over the sleeve as shown in the right-hand portion ofFig. 600. The reason for including a portion of the insulation inthe twist is merely to keep the insulation of the wire from slidingaway from the joint when the paper sleeve is pushed over it. Inno case should the joint be FIG. 602.—CABLE SPLICING. The two ends of the cable with a single pair thus connected isshown in Fig. 601. The joint in the wires should be so spaced that the joints in apair will not be directly opposite each other, and the joints inthe various pairs will be approximately evenly distributedthroughout the entire length of the splice. After all wires arespliced hot paraffin should be poured over them, a ladle beingused to dip the paraffin from the melting pot and pour it over thesplice. The pot should be placed under the splice so that the sur-plus paraffin will drain back into it. This operation of boiling outshould extend from the ends of the splices towards the middle ofit and should be continued until every trace of moisture hasbeen driven off as indicated by the absence of bubbles. Thesplice should then be thoroughly taped with a strip of muslin AERIAL CABLE CONSTRUCTION. 823 about one inch wide, as shown in Fig. 602. Some may preferto omit this w
