Plague of 1630 in northern Italy, illustration. The dead and dying are being buried and cared for by the living in this depiction of a scene in the countryside of northern Italy in around 1630. It shows the effects of the Great Plague of 1630 (also called the Great Plague of Milan), an outbreak of bubonic plague that affected northern and central Italy. Over 100,000 people are thought to have died. Artwork from 'L'Idea di un Principe ed Eroe Cristiano in Francesco I d'Este, di Modena e Reggio Duca VIII', a series of prints that illustrated Francesco I d'Este's life as a ruler and in daily life. This 1659 illustration is by Italian artist Bartolomeo Fenice.
