During World War 2 they were used as breakwaters to create two temporary harbours, Mulberry A at Omaha beach, and Mulberry B at Gold beach at Normandy in France to offload supplies and equipment to support the allied invasion in June 1944 due to the lack of suitable ports along the invasion beached.
