Brussels, 22 Oct 1864; d Brussels, 22 Feb 1940). Belgian painter. His career was marked by the deafness that he suffered from 1875, resulting in a life that was to some degree isolated. After instruction at the local drawing school (1876-82), he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (1882-7). From the 1890s he participated in various exhibitions, both in the official salons and with independent artists' groups such as La Libre Esthétique, the successor of Les XX in Brussels. After the academy, he continued his lessons at a free academy, La Patte de dindon. He participated in the Vienna Secession in 1898 and 1899.
