Like the Bohemianwaxwings and American crossbill, their summer home is inthe fur countries, but occasionally they have been known toappear in the northern portions of New England. Duringsevere winters they may be observed about the Great Lakesregion of Illinois and Indiana, about the same time we lookfor the hardy pine grosbeak or jolly snowflake and thewary raven. Their appearance in the Central States isunquestionably due to the scarcity of food in more northerlylatitudes. They are familiar birds, and resort to our gar-dens and orchards to feed on grass and weed seed. Easilytamed, they make interesting pets. The eggs
