Next, a long easy slope took us pasttwo curious domes of rock, and afterwards by a largermass called Aurer Masarres, which forms a landmarkfor many miles round. On the way I heard a rustle inthe grass and fired at the indistinct form of an animal,which fell, and proved to be a duiker ; as I had no meat THE LAST VILLAGE 327 for dinner, it was very welcome. As w^e descendedlower and lower, the landscape presented the appear-ance of a series of forest-clad hills, interspersed withwell-watered dales.
