One of the original Border Common Ridings, there is a reference to a ceremony in the Town Council minutes of 1686. On Saturday the Cornet receives the Burgh Flag at the Tollbooth and leads the cavalcade to the Watering Stane and to the Burgess Cairn, the only boundary stone still existince.
