Anti-ulcer drug. Misoprostol is a type of prostaglandin drug that is used to protect the lining of the stomach and intestines against gastric ulcer formation. It is taken to counteract the effects of non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs, for example aspirin, in patients who take them regularly. It is also used unofficially as a non-surgical method of abortion during the early stages of pregnancy, and can be used to induce labour, although it has not been approved for these functions.
